Interestingly, Shepard’s animation changes here depending on gender. Male Shepard only pats his belly with one hand briefly. Not sure how I feel about the implications there.

I noticed this too. I’m more surprised Jane didn’t put her fist Anderson spine for invading her personal space like that.
